How to Cure a Zombie Villager in Minecraft
Safely trap the zombie villager, apply Weakness, then feed a Golden Apple to restore it. Learn brewing shortcuts, cure-time boosts, and how to unlock powerful discounts.

- 1× Splash Potion of Weakness (or Arrow of Weakness)
- 1× Golden Apple
- Blocks or a Boat to trap the mob safely (and a roof so it doesn’t burn)
- Name Tag (optional) to prevent despawn

- Secure the zombie villager. Use blocks/boat to immobilize, add a roof (or night time), and keep other mobs away.
- Apply Weakness. Throw a Splash Potion of Weakness at the mob (or use an Arrow of Weakness).
- Feed a Golden Apple. Interact with the weakened zombie villager using a Golden Apple – it will shake and emit red particles.
- Wait 2–5 minutes. In Java, surrounding with iron bars and placing a bed + workstation nearby can shorten cure time.
- Assign a job & trade. Place a workstation to lock in desirable trades and enjoy permanent discounts.
Unlike most potions, Weakness doesn’t require Nether Wart first.
- Water Bottle → add Fermented Spider Eye = Potion of Weakness
- Then add Gunpowder = Splash Potion of Weakness
Tip: You can also use a Lingering Weakness potion with Dragon’s Breath, or apply Weakness via tipped arrows.
- Permanent discounts: The cured villager remembers your help. Repeating the cure on the same villager can stack discounts to extremely low prices.
- Prevent despawn: Use a Name Tag or keep the mob within render distance until cured.
- Sunlight safety: Zombies burn in daylight; use a roof, tunnel, or equip a helmet.
- Speeding the cure (Java): Iron bars and a bed/workstation in range can reduce cure time.
Does difficulty affect curing?
No—the steps are the same on all difficulties. However, Hard increases the chance villagers get zombified.
Why didn’t the apple work?
You must have the Weakness effect active on the zombie villager first; then use the Golden Apple.
How do I get a Golden Apple?
Craft with an Apple + 8 Gold Ingots, find in structure chests, or trade/loot depending on version.
How can I keep villagers safe after curing?
Light the area, add doors/fences, and assign a workstation + bed so they path home at night.
